Workshop for Church-Based Advocacy for Food Justice in West Africa, November 2011
Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance, the Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in West Africa (FECCIWA) and the ACT Alliance held a workshop on church-based advocacy for food justice in West Africa, in Accra, on 13-16 November. The workshop brought together over 45 participants from almost every West African country, as well as from several different church-based constituencies from ACT Alliance, the Caritas family, Anglican Alliance and United Evangelical Mission.
The workshop aimed at consolidating a church-based movement for food justice in West Africa. Specific work plans and strategies were created at national, regional and international levels and networks were strengthened for mutual support. Participants learned from local farmers about the challenges of smallholder farmers in Ghana, and debated emerging issues such as large-scale land acquisitions (‘land grabbing’) and competition from subsidised imports. The participants also reviewed major policy instruments such as the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), the human rights instruments and processes on the right to food, such as the Regional Network on the Promotion of the Right to Food (RAPDA).
An online forum has been created as a space for participants to carry forward their commitments and keep in touch.

Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance invited its members to join together in a two and half day consultation from 8-10 March 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa to discuss on how to work together to build and strengthen the ecumenical movement for food justice. The meeting, co-hosted by the Economic Justice Network of FOCCISA, provided EAA members with the opportunity to meet face to face, share experiences, build networks and deepen understanding and opportunities for collaboration. The consultation also sought to provide a platform for sharing the Food for Life Campaign Framework for Action, strategize and plan for actions, events and directions for the campaign. Of importance was also the opportunity to share experiences of faith as a motivation to campaign for food justice and to use this to identify areas for further theological reflections. The consultation was attended by 45 participants from Africa, Asia, North America, Europe and Africa.
