Our new food campaign slogan: Food For Life
The Campaign
The Food for Life Campaign of the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance aims to overcome hunger and to improve livelihoods in harmony with creation and social justice.
An estimated one billion people in the world live with constant hunger. This does not include people who were hungry as a result of war or natural disaster. These are the people for whom hunger is a daily fact of life. Every day 16,000 children die of hunger and malnutrition. Every year, 10 million people die of hunger-related causes.
And the situation is getting worse, dramatically so in the past two years. The food price shock that hit the headlines in the early months of 2008 threw over 100 million more people into a life of hunger.
Hunger is an appalling reality in our world, especially because there is no need for it. We currently grow enough food to feed double the world’s current population if it was shared equally. The current reality is not due to the physical limits of our planet but to social limits in the ways we have chosen to produce, share, buy and sell food.
The good news is that this means we can change the reality and ensure that everyone has enough food to live life in dignity. Do we have the courage to change our own lives and our own societies to make this possible?
