Action Alert: World AIDS Day Resources Available

14. October 2013

World AIDS Day is commemorated on 1 December each year, helping to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and to demonstrate international solidarity in responding to the pandemic.

During 2011-2015, World AIDS Days have the theme of "Getting to zero: Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deaths". This signifies a push towards greater access to treatment for all, a focus on the root causes of vulnerability to HIV transmission, and a call for all of us to fulfill the promises we have made – whether as political leaders, religious leaders or individuals.

The Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance offers two main resources for churches and Christians on this occasion – a liturgy, and a devotional calendar for advent.

World AIDS Day liturgy: 1 December falls on a Sunday this year, which gives us an added opportunity to lift up hope and action in response to HIV and AIDS. This World AIDS Day liturgy (available now in English, and soon in French and Spanish, atwww.e-alliance.ch/en/s/hivaids/world-aids-day/) celebrates God’s love for us, sustaining us during the three decades of living with HIV and AIDS in our world, communities and churches. It celebrates all that has been achieved. It also seeks to encourage renewal and re-dedication to the ministry of serving in our HIV-positive world, for the vision of “zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths” is supported by our faith in God our creator and Jesus our savior.

Advent Calendar: Reflect and pray each day from 1 December to 6 January with our daily Advent devotions. The devotions, first shared in 2012, will also be available in French and Spanish. You can visit the calendar online or sign up to receive a devotion each day by email, at: www.e-alliance.ch/en/s/hivaids/world-aids-day/

If you have worship resources, bible studies, reflections or other suggestions for World AIDS Day actions, please send them to sspeicher@e-alliance.ch so that we can share them more widely!
