Preventing Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT)
Eliminating new HIV infections among children by 2015 and substantially reducing AIDS-related maternal deaths is an international target agreed by governments in 2011. To support this, UNAIDS launched a Global Plan in 2011 to accelerate efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmissions in 22 focus countries.
Faith-based groups have long played a key role in preventing mother to child transmission as they deliver extensive HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services in many of the most hard-to-reach areas of the world. According to the World Health Organization, faith-based groups provide from 30-70% of health care in most African countries.
Within the framework of the Global Plan, some 70 representatives of faith-based organizations, governments and women living with HIV met in late February 2013 to strengthen joint efforts to ensure no child is born with HIV. Over 2 days, they developed recommendations to strengthen partnerships and enhance the complementarity between governments and faith-based health services.
As a result of the consultation, strong follow-up action at national level will be critical in moving from recommendations to action, and intensifying collaboration between African Christian Health Associations, other key faith-based stakeholders, and women living with HIV.
